While EMS workers play an important role in the health and safety of the public, they also face the risk of injury or illness on the job everyday. From ambulance collisions to exposures and communicable disease, there are a number of potential dangers that EMS personnel must take precaution against.
During a recent webinar hosted by the NHTSA Office of EMS, Audrey Reichard, an epidemiologist from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), discussed some of the research happening at the national level to better understand the scope of work-related injuries and illnesses in EMS.
Also on the webinar were Mike Szczygiel, chair of the National Association of EMTs Health and Safety Committee, and Bryan McRay, director of safety and risk management for the Richmond Ambulance Authority in Richmond, Virginia.
