NAEMSP Offers Resuscitation Research Fellowship

Cardiac arrest and traumatic injuries kill tens of thousands of Americans each year. Many could be saved if they could be sustained long enough to make it to a hospital. However, to advance the care of patients requiring resuscitation, more research is needed.

The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) has recognized this need and is currently accepting applications for its third Resuscitation Research Fellowship award, which is designed to:

  • Prepare individuals for a career in prehospital resuscitation research
  • Increase commitment to resuscitation research among academic institutions
  • Expand the field of resuscitation research

The NAEMSP Resuscitation Research Fellowship comprises the Applicant, the Mentor, and the Institution:

Applicant — The applicant for the fellowship must be a junior faculty member (position below Associate Professor, within 10 years of completing residency or fellowship training, and have no R01-level or similar awards), and hold a terminal degree (MD, DO, PHD, PharmD, etc.). Residency trained Emergency Medicine physicians are given preference but physicians not trained in Emergency Medicine and nonphysicians may also apply.

Mentor — Mentorship is a critical part of the fellowship. A primary mentor who is an accomplished investigator in resuscitation research with a track record of publishing studies, obtaining grant funding, and mentoring must be identified. Co-mentors may also be identified and mentorship committees are strongly encouraged.

Institution — An institution in the United States or Canada may apply as long as it is 1) university-based or linked to an academic institution; 2) has an active prehospital resuscitation research program; and 3) sponsors a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada-approved Emergency Medicine residency program.

Applications must be received by November 20, 2008, for this two-year award fellowship that begins on July 1, 2009. For complete details, visit www.naemsp.org or click on Resuscitation Research Fellowship now.
